China’s cinema audience is changing. And that creates new opportunities for brands.
When we talk about China’s cinema market, the conversation usually starts with box office numbers. But who is actually going to the cinema?
China recorded nearly 800 million cinema admissions by early October 2026, and few interesting findings from recent industry data:
🎬 Cinema isn’t just for younger audiences.
During the summer season, moviegoers aged 40+ accounted for nearly 26% of admissions, a record high.
🎬 Women remain the majority, but different films attract different audiences.
Women made up around 56% of summer moviegoers. Yet films like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odysseyattracted more male viewers, while the Chinese animated hit All Wishes Come True! had a predominantly female audience.
🎬 Geography shifts with the calendar.
During Chinese New Year, when millions travel home, third- and fourth-tier cities contributed nearly 53% of the box office. In summer, however, first-tier cities recorded their highest box office share in six years.
For brands, the takeaway is simple: China’s cinema audience isn’t one mass market. It changes by age, by film and by season.
And that makes cinema advertising more than just a reach play. With the right media planning, brands can connect with different consumer groups across cities and seasons, in an immersive entertainment environment.
